Ancient Tattooing Methods

You’ve all probably seen the way modern tattoos are applied.  It’s actually quite interesting to watch a skilled tattoo artist apply just the right amount of ink under the skin so that the client will be forever happy with his tattoo.

Tattoos weren’t always applied in the same manner.  In ancient times tattoos were applied with sharp objects like carved bones or other sharp objects like quills from a porcupine.  These rather rudimentary implements were dipped in a solution of ink that was made of locally available material like plant based pigments.

The skilled tattoo artist then tapped the tattooing implement in rapid succession hundreds or even thousands of times.  The impliment would have to be repeatably dipped into the ink so the skin received the right amount of ink.  I imagine that there were a lot of tattoos that didn’t turn out very well.

People of that era didn’t have the luxury of of using tattoo removal creams if they weren’t happy with the job that the tribal tattoo artist did.  They just lived with the results whether they were good or bad.
