Curtains Over Plantation Shutters?

Most people, when installing interior plantation shutters, forgo the idea of hanging curtains, or even adding a valance to the same window. This is because plantation shutters themselves are rather ostentatious and are often considered to be a decorative choice of window treatment by themselves.  If you choose the right kind of plantation shutter, one that is decorative and looks nice, with a good quality finish, there really isn’t any need for curtains, especially if you buy the larger, full window length kind.

There are times when you may need to look into adding curtains though. Perhaps you only have half-sized shutters, or you might feel that your room needs additional color or livening up a bit. One idea that would accomplish these purposes without looking overdone or detracting from your plantation shutters, is to add drapery above the shutters if you have the wall space to do so, on a rod that comes out quite far from the wall, over the shutters themselves. Then have the curtains hang or loop down the sides of the shutters, framing them. This can look very nice, and actually highlight the shutters, and soften the harder wood angles if done properly.

Of course, adding curtains to a window that has plantation shutters does pose problems when it comes to opening and closing the shutters, so it may not always be the best option.
