Hellraiser Review
Considered one of Clive Barker’s best horror movies, Hellraiser falls on my top ten list of best horror movies ever. This 1987 British horror film directed by Clive Barker himself explored the issue of pain having a direct link to pleasure and brought us the iconoclastic cenobite Pinhead.
The story came from the novella The Hellbound Heart which was also written by Barker and the movie follows closely to the central characters and theme of the novella. The story focuses around Frank Cotton as he purchases a antique puzzlebox and then tries to open. This box ends up being a road to Hell, a personal abyss of pain where there is generally no escape. But when Frank’s brother Larry moves into his forgotten home with his wife, Julia, he sheds his blood which allows Frank to begin to escape from his imprisonment thanks to the help of Larry’s wife.
What makes this film unique in its vision is the exploration of evil as just an entity that once manipulated by humans do we then get unspeakable horrors. This is usually the central point of most of Clive Barker’s visions.
