How Aging Discolors Teeth

Many people notice that as they get older their teeth slowly turn yellow, even if they are not smokers and do not drink lots of coffee. They are left wondering why this happens even if they do everything right. It happens because your teeth consist of two layers, the pearly white outer layer, called the enamel, and a yellow-colored inner layer called the dentin. When you are young, your enamel is thick and strong and thus white. But as you age you enamel begins to thin. As your enamel thins, the dentin underneath the enamel begins to show through in increasing amounts. This causes the gradual yellowing of the teeth that comes with age. This is different and harder to remove than normal yellow teeth stains because it comes from inside the teeth, not as a stain on the enamel.
