How to Identify a Chesterfield Sofa

Chesterfield sofas are fairly easy to identify due to several distinguishing features which make them unique unto themselves. The Chesterfield is believed to have been designed at the request of the fourth Earl of Chesterfield during the 18th century. The Earl wanted a sofa that would allow gentlemen to sit upright in the utmost comfort. A renowned cabinet maker of the time was commissioned to produce this piece of furniture. The product of that design has proven to be a timeless piece of furniture with classic good looks.

The Chesterfield can be identified by the fact that the arms and the back of the sofa are the same height. That is the accepted distinguishing feature of a Chesterfield sofa. There are however other qualities that a Chesterfield sofa usually includes, some of those being rolled arms with hardware embellished front edges, and having the fabric throughout the sofa buttoned down. This buttoning down of the fabric gives the Chesterfield a unique dimpled appearance. When a Chesterfield incorporates all three of these characteristics it becomes instantly recognizable.
