Installing Carpet Underlay
All types of carpet underlay should be installed in the largest possible lengths, with a minimum of seaming. Also, when the carpet is placed over the underlay, the underlay seams should not be the same as the carpet seams. The installation of underlay is even more important than the actual carpet. Be sure the underlay is flat to insure safety, keeping the carpet from becoming rippled or showing seams. Choosing the right type of carpet underlay can increase the longevity and improve the feel of the carpet.
One thing to keep in mind, choosing a thicker underlay does not improve the quality of the carpet; it actually decreases the wearability by causing the underlay to rub against the carpet and literally wear it out. The thicker underlay has a heavier volume than the thinner carpet and, after as short amount of time, natural stretching occurs form waling over the carpet. This stretching causes the carpet to rub against the underlay and wear it out faster than it would with the proper weight of underlay for the carpet.
