Jeans as Fashion – A History
Jeans didn’t take their place in the fashion world of the United States until the mid 1950’s. Young people often called greasers or rockabilly would wear jeans as a sign of rebellion in opposition to traditional clothing. The look was popularized by celebrities of that era like Marlon Brando and James Dean. Jeans were worn as a fashion statement mostly by males during the 1950’s and early 1960’s.
By the time the 1970’s were in full swing men and women were wearing jeans. This can be attributed to the onset of rock and roll as the most popular musical genre of period. The rebellious look and edgy nature of blue jeans ultimately made them the most popular piece of clothing to come out of the period. Jeans continued to gain wide acceptance throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s. It could now be argued that they are the most recognizable and popular item in the American wardrobe. Jeans are now popular in every corner of globe and have become one of the very most popular clothing styles in the entire world.
