Cleaning Roman Blinds

Roman style blinds are lovely, but they are not always the easiest blind to clean. For example, it is much simpler to clean wooden blinds or venetian blinds as generally they just need to be dusted regularly, and occasionally wiped off with a damp rag.  Roman blinds, made from fabric are a different story, however.

In reality, most Roman blinds should be dry-cleaned.  Dry-cleaning them prevents the blinds from shrinking or getting damaged in any other way. It also prevents wrinkling, fading and a lot of tedious ironing if you decide to clean the fabric yourself.

If, after checking the label on your Roman blinds, it is suggested not to dry clean then you will need to look into alternative cleaning methods. One idea, if the main problem is just that they have accumulated a lot of dust, is to vacuum them clean. A decent vacuuming with the brush attachment should bring off most of the dust and it is a fairly fast way to get the job done.

With a Roman blind made from cotton, such as those you often see hanging in kitchen windows, an easy way to clean it is to fill a bathtub up with warm (not hot) water, put some fabric or other gentle fabric cleaner in the bath, and allow the blind to soak in the water for a few hours then rinse off under the shower and hang outside to dry.

How to choose blinds for your conservatory

There are many different types of conservatory blinds available, and it’s sometimes difficult to be sure what is the best option.  There is no one size fits all solution – the best type of window blind for your conservatory will depend on your priorities, and your own personal tastes.

Some of the main types of conservatory blinds are roller blinds (just fabric on a roller), roman blinds (slightly pleated fabric), pleated blinds (again, fabric, but with more pleats), pinoleum blinds (a type of roman blind made from wood or bamboo).

You’ll also need to decide whether you want to just cover the vertical windows in your conservatory, or whether you also want a blind for the roof.  For your roof you can get all of the above blinds types to fit on the inside of your conservatory, as well as  awning, which is installed outside your conservatory, over the roof.

The best blinds are made of metalized fabric, which gives additional protection from the sun and UV rays, and also prevents the blinds from fading quite as easily.
