Take Advantage of the Energy Tax Credit

Right now is the ideal time for home owners to take a look at all of their major appliances and take advantage of the tax credits offered by the federal government.  One big ticket item that you don’t want to overlook is your home air conditioners.  There is additional incentive to replace your old air conditioners because freon (otherwise referred to as R-22) coolant is being phased out at the same time.

In order to qualify for an energy tax credit of $1,500 (which includes both equipment and labor), a split system must have a SEER rating of at least 16 and a package system must have a SEER rating of at least 14.  That doen’t mean that you need to completely rule out units with a SEER rating below the tax credit threshold.  You may be able to find units below the tax credit threshold that make more sense economically.  The main thing that you must look for in any new unit is that it uses the new Puron coolant and not Freon.
